In 1968, ground was broken for the famous Marrakesh Golf Course, under the direction of famed course designers Ted Robinson and Frank Hughes, tons and tons of sand were moved to create the now familiar contours and the huge mound rising 26feet above Portola that would eventually support the clubhouse.
In January 1971, the time had finally come to break ground for the impatiently awaited new Marrakesh clubhouse, designed to have a Moroccan theme. In the beginning, before Palm Desert was 'discovered', Marrakesh welcomed opportunities to support activities of the fledgling community. The Chamber of Commerce Mayor's breakfasts were formally served in the dining room for the handsome fee of $1.00. The first honorary Mayor was film actor David Janssen, followed by Dolores Hope and Arnold Palmer.
So many famous names and faces have graced the walls and greens of this wonderful club over the decades that Marrakesh has become known as the 'Jewel of the Desert'. Many years ago, a former professional architect told the Board that is not beyond the realm of possiblity for Marrakesh to one day be declared a John Woolf Historic Site.
Marrakesh has a rich and historic past and not just for the executive golf course, but the for famous Hollywood Regency Style created by John Woolf. His signature style of ten foot ceilings, floor to ceiling walls of glass, oversized Pullman doors, Mansard rooflines, even the street lights, is a style that is easily recognized by discriminating buyers.
Marrakesh is also known for it's beautiful landscaping, the challenging golf course, tennis and croquet. The clubhouse also offers fine dining along with relaxing views and drinks on the patio plus 14 community swimming pools and spas for extra resort enjoyment.
